The Surgery Saga

Warning: I have created a category entitled TMI (which is translated as too much information). If you are squeamish or do not want to hear about certain medical issues that entail bodily functions, please do not continue reading. However, if this does not bother you, by all means continue.

Yesterday morning I wen to the hospital to have my Cystoscopy with sedation. A cystoscopy is a scope of the bladder. I checked in at 11 AM and did not get into the OR until 12:30. I had to go through a pretty detailed medical history with pre-op nurses, see anesthesiology, and get everything squared away. I was not sure what they were actually going to use for anesthesia, but they did put me under a general, which requires intubation during the procedure.

For the record, I'm going to say that their findings make infinite sense as to why I could not tolerate the original cystoscopy and urondynamic study.

They did the cysto and at first could not find anything. But then they took urine out of my bladder. It was then that they discovered blood vessels and a great deal of inflammation. The doctor also distended my bladder so it could hold me, and also to treat this condition.

The condition they found is called Interstitial Cystitis. It is a very painful chronic condition about which not much is known. It explains the urinary frequency, pain, and incontinence. My original thought is that this has something to do with an autoimmune response and also with Mito itself.

The doctor said he wants me to be seen as soon as possible to discuss treatment options. What they discussed is a bland diet, and medications for pain control. They gave me quite a bit of fluid post-op as well as apple juice because I began to get a little hypoglycemic. In addition, they also gave me a B and O suppository which has helped control the pain with voiding. And believe me, there is a lot of pain in that department.

Fast forward to about 11 PM, I began having extreme pain with voiding. They sent me home with a Vicodin prescription and I had taken a couple of doses of that to see if it would help take the edge off of the pain. It did for a while, but beginning at 1:30 AM this morning, I could not void at all because of the pain. I woke up my Grandma and we headed to the Emergency Room. There, they gave me a B and O suppository again as well as Oxycodone and I was able to void two times at the hospital.

Since then, I have been able to void but it is very painful and difficult. I'm doing the best I can to limit how much pain medication I am taking. The meds make me pretty dopey. Pretty soon I plan on taking my temperature because I'm feeling a little feverish. I'm hoping I'm not developing an infection or anything. Last night my UA came back with no signs of infection, but I was also given two doses of Cipro.

The hope and plan is to go back to work tomorrow. We will see how that goes.
